The Integral Cultural Coach Program

The Integral Cultural Coach Program is designed for:

Ψ      Those who care deeply about their world and feel frustrated and tired of struggling with conventional approaches that do not get at the underlying complexity of current issues.

Ψ      Those who wish to be catalysts for long term systemic change in their communities or organizations to deal with complex 21st century challenges.

Ψ      Those who wish to learn, and engage with others who have a passion and commitment for transformational learning and action.

Integral Cultural Coaches work to transform the gap between interpersonal dynamics and cultural structures which are impeding us from effectively responding to complex challenges. They are engaged in designing, facilitating, and evaluating processes for evolving how we learn to think and work together,

Integral: a systems approach requiring the integration of  inner personal awareness and cultural values, with outer actions of individuals and social systems.

Cultural: the emphasis is on " cultural" to acknowledge that the culture i.e. the collective norms, institutional policies and structures in which we live, must also be the locus of change, not just the individual.

Coach: someone who stimulates individuals or systems to organize in a more adaptive fashion in response to complexities. This may be in the form of individual or organizational leadership

“There is almost a sensual longing for communion with others who have a large vision. The immense fulfillment of the friendship between those engaged in furthering the evolution of consciousness has a quality impossible to describe."

The Integral Cultural Coach Program is a progressive 2 year program. The first year Foundation Program may be taken as a stand-alone program, and also is the prerequisite for the second year Cultural Coach Training. The programs provides a context, stimulation and supportive culture for learning as well as introducing methods of applying this learning

This two-year program is based on the Four Fields of Learning – an integrated approach to adult learning that combines theory and practice of relevance to the individual, organizational and societal level.  The Four Fields of Learning are:

¨      theoretical frameworks

¨      interior personal capacities

¨      exterior system analysis

¨      application

Year 1  Foundations Program

The Foundation Year provides an integrative perspective that combines the social, emotional and reasoning capacities needed to meet current societal challenges. This concept is based on current theory in adult development, integral theory, transformational learning, complexity theory, dialogue and deliberation and action research.  The Foundation Year Program develops the core personal capacities of presence, reflection and inquiry in relation to this theoretical base.  Inquiry and learning will be stimulated within a context of a supportive community of learners, using theoretical frameworks and personal action research. Participants are mentored in ways to support the development of a culture for transformation in their own organization or community.  This may occur through formal leadership roles such as non-profit, or municipal leadership or through informal leadership roles where much impact can be created through considered input at a volunteer meeting.

Format

The learning will occur through individual self-study and reflection, residential gatherings, online learning, peer coaching, case studies and community application. The format consists of 4 distance learning sessions, 6 individual mentoring sessions and three 3 day residential sessions.

Outcomes

The intent of the program is to foster:

¨      Increased capacity for reflective thinking

¨      Increased capacity for being present

¨      An understanding of the relationship between challenge and support in the learning/evolving process

¨      Ability to check assumptions of self and others using Dialogue and Action Inquiry

¨      Development of connective thinking

¨      Anticipation of the impact of future trends

¨      Articulation of core concepts and ability to create metaphors and stories to make them relevant to others

¨      Perception and assessment of the complex nature of social issues (i.e. they are not simple or static; they are systemic, interconnected, dynamic, diverse, developmental etc.)

¨      Capacity to normalize and navigate developmental transitions

¨      Development of a peer learning network

¨      Support to attract and create a local community of learning

¨      Awareness of the importance of designed processes to stimulate and support social change

¨      Understanding of the connection between personal values, cultural norms and institutional policies and strucutures

¨      Development of action researchers/learning leaders

Year 2   Cultural Coach Training: Application to Societal Issues

Cultural Coach Training is a program of action research that builds on the theory and personal capacities developed in the Foundation Year.  This year focuses on learning how to design processes for increasing organizational and societal capacity to respond to complex issues.  Cultural coaches are active change agents in the public, private and non-profit realm.  They support cultural transformation at the organizational and societal level.  They are engaged in designing and facilitating processes for evolving how we learn to think and work together.  This work includes assessing the issues, designing  interventions (e.g. deliberative process, focused dialogue, action inquiry etc.), implementing and evaluating the process.

Format

The learning will occur through individual self-study and reflection, residential gatherings, online learning, peer coaching, case studies and community application.  Case studies and assignments are based on actual situations faced by program participants.  The format consists of 4 distance learning sessions, 6 individual mentoring sessions and three 3 day residential sessions.

Outcomes

The intent of the program is to foster competencies in:

¨      Assessment of community and organizational capacities

¨      Facilitation of forums for effective citizen engagement in deliberative decision making on complex issues

¨      Identification of social, economic and ecological sustainability indicators

¨      Design of an action research project

¨      Development and support of the Cultural Coach professional association
